It's disgusting how low-budget this looks by episodes 9-10 when our heroes are being pursued by grotesque CGI block vehicles (what Netflix produced show would be complete without something so janky?) that flip around like legos.
It's typical Imaishi: super-stylish limited animation that takes a back seat to visual overload. Very detailed designs, slick background art, and the animation. What better company than Trigger to represent the shallowest side of cyberpunk and its decline, for they are the ultimate style over substance company in anime? They always offer a very distinct look, a great style, and meticulous storyboarding, but all of their stories fall flat, sooner or later, and the animation doesn't have the subtlety or weight you'd find in better productions-frankly, it's the art and the effects that carry their productions much of the time, and it's easy to get swept-up in the visual spectacle to the point of not even noticing. I sort of exaggerate, seeing as I've mentioned some exceptions that I obviously enjoyed, but it seems like the only direction from here is down. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners falls into the latter category-it takes a turn for the better around episodes 5-6, when things get dark and the lifestyle catches up with them, presenting cyberization as a high-tech drug addiction, but it's not long before we're back to wallowing in flashy set-pieces, heads getting crushed like grapes, and WHOA YOUR NEW CYBERWARE IS SO COOL! Surprisingly, the deterioration of one of the characters and his glitched-out, disoriented decline is handled well, and it was actually kind of sad seeing him milling about and on the verge of bumping into walls while being assailed by his past. Then there are the ones that glorify the cyborg lifestyle and portray it as oh soooooo cool and focus on mind-numbing action, ridiculous digital The cyberpunk genre mixes gritty dystopia with high tech, and there are basically two main kinds on display: stuff like Ghost in the Shell or Texhnolyze that use the tropes to explore themes of dehumanization and loss of meaning. In this newest reanimation of the genre, there isn't any rotting meat left to tenderize, just raw horse hide and bones. If there were ever a dead horse we need to stop beating and just bury already, it would probably be cyberpunk. Edgerunners often lose their lives, if the cyberware does not break their minds first but in his fight for survival inside a corrupt system, David is ready to risk it all. However, associating with Lucy introduces David to the world of Edgerunners-cyborg criminals who will break any law for money.
